OFFICIAL: Man City complete signing of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth
The Semenyo saga came to an end on Friday, with City confirming the arrival of the Ghana international. The Premier League champions reportedly beat competition from four other Big Six clubs and activated Semenyo’s £65 million release clause at Bournemouth.
Semenyo played his final match for Bournemouth on Thursday, scoring the winning goal in a 3–2 victory over Tottenham. This season, he has registered 10 goals and three assists in the Premier League, placing him third in the Golden Boot race.
Having joined City in January, Semenyo has signed his contract and will wear the No. 42 shirt. There has been no official confirmation regarding his debut, but he is widely expected to feature in City’s FA Cup third-round tie against Exeter at the Etihad Stadium.
Semenyo said after joining Manchester City: “I am so proud to have joined Manchester City. I have watched City over the last decade under Pep Guardiola, and they have been the dominant team in the Premier League as well as achieving amazing things in the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.
“They have set the highest of standards and it’s a club with world-class players, world-class facilities and one of the greatest managers ever in Pep. I have so much scope for improvement, so to be at this club, at this stage of my career, is perfect for me. It’s a real privilege to be here.”
Semenyo is seen as a significant addition for City as they look to refresh their options on the wing. At present, Jérémy Doku is the club’s only fully fit natural winger, with Savinho sidelined through injury. However, City are not expected to stop their recruitment there, with reports suggesting they are monitoring Marc Guéhi’s situation at Crystal Palace amid concerns in central defence. A move for a right-back is also under consideration.
Manchester City’s upcoming fixtures include Exeter in the FA Cup (January 10), Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup semi-finals (January 14), Manchester United in the Premier League (January 17) and Bodø/Glimt in the Champions League (January 21).
